Wait 5 sec.

I measured my small (wall mounted, bedroom, bigger than a monitor but not big by any modern standards) TV set and it's in that area. I agree that it sounds ridiculous on its face so I went down the rabbit hole to look at what retailers think. The listed size brackets were 24–31", 32–38", 39–45", etc. Even if we categorise those as XS, S, M then there are seven larger categories available (of which maybe three are HOLY SHIT YOU COULD WATCH THIS FROM THE NEXT CITY). They recommend sitting around 1.5× as far away as the size of your TV, eg 4'6" from a 36" TV. This is because of how flat screens work (ie CRT would be different). That sounds about an appropriate size, then, for someone in a small living room.
