The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the closure of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office in Ejisu. The office was reportedly locked up by some irate youth believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were protesting the appointment of a new manager. In an interview with JoyNews’ James Avedzi, the MP described the action as unacceptable and harmful to Ghana’s democratic progress and urged “government to act swiftly by investigating the matter and ensuring that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.”According to him, decisive action will serve as a deterrent to others who may attempt similar acts in the future and help safeguard the country’s democratic institutions.“This is a serious issue. I thought by this time these things had settled down and government had focused on working hard for Ghana. But it is becoming worrying that such cruel and uncivilised actions are taking place in this country,” he said.Mr. Baafi questioned how individuals could forcefully shut down a public institution without regard for the law or the workers who depend on it.“How can you enter a public sector institution and close it down without recourse to the law or consideration for the people who work there? This is absolutely not right and it must be condemned,” he stressed. He warned that allowing such incidents to continue could undermine the country’s democratic gains, noting that democracy in Ghana has come a long way and must be protected.
