Jameis Winston is just completing side quests at this point. The New York Giants quarterback is reportedly joining Netflix in a special guest role for the streaming service’s Major League Baseball (MLB) Opening Night matchup between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. Winston is currently plying his trade for the New York GiantsGettyAlthough it may seem strange at first why an NFL player has been asked to join the coverage of baseball, Winston has a storied relationship with the sport. Prior to the 2014 season, he was named as a preseason All-American by Baseball America where he served as a utility player. During his time at Florida State University, he was a dual-sport athlete, and specifically chose to attend FSU for the sole reason that they allowed him to play both baseball and football. During his collegiate baseball career, Winston was both an outfielder and a pitcher. He found success on the mound for the Seminoles finishing with a 1.94 ERA, 0.912 WHIP and 52 strikeouts over 60.1 innings pitched. As a hitter, Winston also hit .209 across two seasons. The 32-year-old has been employed by Netflix as a special guest only, which leaves questions over what the extent of his role will be during the broadcast. He will, however, serve in the same role as comedian Brett Kreischer – a fellow FSU alumni. Netflix has gone all out for their broadcasting team, announcing that they are bringing in seven-time National League MVP Barry Bonds as a studio analyst, as well as Albert Pujols and Anthony Rizzo. Elle Duncan, who abruptly departed ESPN at the end of 2025, will serve as the show’s host, while Matt Vasgersian will be the play-by-play announcer with CC Sabathia and Hunter Pence as analysts. Audition for career after retirement? For Winston, who entered the NFL as the first overall pick in the 2015 draft, he has spent the last six seasons of his pro career mainly serving in a backup role. Now 32-years-old, the charismatic figure with an infectious laugh and personality could be looking ahead to what lies in store for him after he decides to call time on playing football. He already stole the show when he appeared as a guest on FOX Sports’ NFL coverage in December, and he is very much a fan-favorite. Some fans have even argued that Winston’s appearance alone will bring more fans into baseball to start the 2026 MLB season and are calling for him to take up a greater broadcasting role. “From Heisman winner to two-sport athlete… now stepping into the media spotlight. Jameis Winston really said “I can do it all” Netflix bringing MLB to a new audience is interesting — this could actually change how baseball is consumed,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Winston has a personality tailor-made for TVGetty“Netflix going full crossover mode! Jameis Winston calling Yankees-Giants on Opening Night? That’s chaos in the best way. Can’t wait to see if he brings the same energy he does on the field March 25 locked in!” a second wrote. “@netflix this needs to be permanent @Jaboowins will bring eyes to this,” a third fan commented.“Jameis is and has been gold in the booth. I think he’s one of them Swiss Army knives who could do multiple sports color commentary,” a fourth stated.A fifth added: “Jameis is gonna be so beloved one day when he enters the media space after his playing days.”The 2026 MLB season gets underway on March 25 with the huge clash between Aaron Judge’s Yankees and Luis Arráez’s – who is fresh off a World Baseball Classic victory with Venezuela – Giants.
