Emerging Market Just Bests Pavlovian In Louisiana Derby Thriller

Wait 5 sec.

Maiden winner and 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' EMERGING MARKET (c, 3, Candy Ride {Arg}–Wild Empress, by Empire Maker) and Sunland Derby winner Pavlovian (Pavel) threw down in the Fair Grounds stretch Saturday but it was Chad Brown and the colors of Klaravich Stables who came out on top in the GII Louisiana Derby.Bet down to 2-1 off that maiden win at Tampa Feb. 7 which netted him a 97 Beyer Speed Figure, Emerging Market drew outside and spent much of the race in the back portion of the main field. Conversely, 21-1 longshot Pavlovian sped away from the rail and handled the pace for Reddam Racing through fractions of :22.65 and :46.23.Coming wide to engage off the far turn, Emerging Market still had the early leader to contend with inside along with a late bid from the closing Golden Tempo (Curlin) but was more than up for the task, fighting back even as Pavlovian briefly headed him dangerously close to home. Digging in just at the right time, he got his nose in front to give jockey Flavien Prat the graded stakes double. Golden Tempo ran third in a final time of 1:55.18.With the win, Emerging Market picked up 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
