It explores the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysterious disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp—in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.”The book’s official synopsis offered a few more details: “Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any 13-year-old: She’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.“As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances.”The God of the Woods: A NovelNow 49% OffWhat has Moore said about the plot?Moore hasn’t given any specific details about the series, but she did reflect on the Van Laar family’s illusion of self-reliance in the book, noting that it has come at the expense of others from the nearby community.“They’re this hyper wealthy family living a rarefied existence, having convinced themselves that they’ve done it all themselves, that they are self-reliant, that they didn’t need anybody else, when in fact they built the house compound on the back of the local people in the nearby community. But they don’t recognize that,” she said in her July 2024 interview with ELLE. “They think they want to breed self-reliance for their children, but not that kind, only the kind that works for them.”Who else is in the cast?No other cast members have been revealed yet, but Netflix will provide updates in the future. In the meantime, expect a colorful cast of characters from different backgrounds to round out the cast. The series will likely feature a struggle between the elite and middle-class citizens in the town, as well as the valued employees who have helped bring it to life. In Moore’s 2024 ELLE feature, she revealed that the employees “represent characters who transcend, who can transmit messages between the two, and who function as outsiders in a different way.”“Throwing all of these class tiers together onto one preserve made for really interesting narrative tension, interesting character development,” she added of the book. “I found it really pleasurable to throw everybody into the mix and just let them bounce off one another like electrons and see what would happen.”When will The God of the Woods be released? The series has no release date yet, but fans of the novel should stay tuned for any future developments.
