At least 30% kharif crop in state damaged by heavy rain

(file photo)Two days of incessant rains in Marathwada and other parts of the state have affected approximately 28 lakh hectare under various crops. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed all guardian ministers and others to hit the streets and travel to flood-affected areas to speed up rescue and relief work. This is the third consecutive month where heavy rainfall has damaged crops and caused flood-like situations in different parts of the state.ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW VIDEO“So far, financial assistance worth Rs 2,215 crore has been sanctioned to 31.64 lakh farmers. Out of this, Rs 1,829 crore has been distributed at the district level and will be deposited in bank accounts of the farmers in the next 8 to 10 days,” said Fadnavis.The amount is a compensation for previous damages caused by heavy rains in earlier months. In July-August, heavy rainfall caused damage to crops on around 15.45 lakh hectare. The total damage to the area under kharif in the last three months is approximately 43 lakh hectare, which is around 30 percent of the total kharif crop (excluding sugarcane) for 2025-26.Opposition parties have demanded for wet drought to be declared in Maharashtra, as Dharashiv, Beed, Parbhani, and Solapur districts continue to suffer due to unprecedented rains and flash floods in several parts of Marathwada. On September 22 and 23, Dharashiv district witnessed 122.5 mm rain, while Beed recorded 113.7 mm. In the last week, the state witnessed eight deaths and ten injuries.Since June 1, the state has received 996.7 mm rain, which is 103.57 percent of the state average.Fadnavis added that the process of conducting panchnamas was a continuous one and the government will keep compensating for the losses. He was speaking after the state cabinet meeting, where losses caused by heavy rains was discussed.Replying to the Opposition’s demand for a wet drought declaration, Fadnavis said the government will not let farmers down and ensure adequate compensation. According to sources, the government is unlikely to accept the Opposition’s demand.Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar said that the amount of compensation for the losses of households, animals, and crops should be distributed separately based on the type of loss, to which Fadnavis replied in the affirmative. “Relief work has not stopped anywhere.Story continues below this adDistrict Collectors have been given the authority to distribute immediate relief in cases of unfortunate incidents like death, loss of livestock, damage to houses. The administration has been given full freedom to provide immediate relief to the affected people at the local level as well, and precautions have been taken to ensure that there is no shortage of funds,” he said.Heavy rains in the last few days have caused severe damage to agriculture and houses in districts like Dharashiv, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Solapur, Beed, Parbhani, etc. Seventeen teams of NDRF and SDRF have been engaged in rescue operations in these areas. On Monday, 27 villagers in Dharashiv were rescued using a helicopter, while 200 have been shifted to safer places by the NDRF and Army. Similarly, 465 individuals in Ahilyanagar district, around 40 in Solapur, and 160 families in Jalgaon were shifted to safer locations.“A proposal for assistance will be sent to the central government. But the state has started providing immediate assistance. The guardian ministers have been instructed to visit the flood-hit areas without causing any disturbance to the relief work,” said Fadnavis, who too will be visiting Marathwada on Wednesday.
