Liverpool fans found it hard to be too positive about losing 2-1 at Crystal Palace, but how worried should we be about the bigger picture?Arne Slot‘s side suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, succumbing to a last-gasp Eddie Nketiah goal. While Liverpool were far better after the break, following a dire first half, it was the latest unconvincing performance and this time the result reflected that. Here, Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) discussed the defeat with The Redmen TV’s Dan Clubbe (@dan_clubbe), looking at both the game and the overall current outlook. The good…DAN: This shouldn’t take long!It was a game to forget for everyone involved from a Liverpool perspective, but Alisson can at least take solace from his own standards being at their highest level. He kept us in the contest in the first half and certainly didn’t deserve to end up on the losing side.Often during his seven-year spell on Merseyside, I’ve been indebted to Alisson, and I’m thankful that we own the best goalkeeper in the world. This was another one of those occasions- without him, this would’ve got ugly very quickly.A handful of others were just ‘okay’ – therefore, the only other positive I can find is Chiesa making another impactful cameo, following by far his best performance in a Liverpool shirt during midweek. He almost scored before he momentarily gave us a glimmer of hope, and he’s really staking a claim for more.HENRY: As Dan says, Ali was magnificent – it’s performances like this that drill home the fact that there’s him on his level, and then the rest of the goalkeepers in the world.Seeing Chiesa making an impact from the bench again was also great to see, and there’s definitely an argument for giving him more starts.I can’t remember the last time I covered so little in this ‘good’ section, which is depressing! The bad…DAN: Where to start? We’ve been ‘getting away with it’ since minute one week one, according to our rivals, but this was a whole new level of below-par performance. The normally dependable Bradley was poor – same goes for Macca, who’s having his stickiest spell since joining – and Ibou, who can look error-prone at times. He produced the worst individual first half I’ve seen from a Liverpool defender since Lovren at Wembley – just all over the place, making crazy decisions, missing chances. The new signings are probably where the main focus lies. Kerkez was again off the pace, which is arguably the trickiest to explain, given the campaign he had last season.Isak is clearly severely lacking match sharpness, and to his credit, wasn’t lacking in endeavour and very nearly came up with a moment of his own making occasionally. Wirtz is perhaps the biggest worry of all, as another somewhat innocuous performance goes by. He can’t seem to click with those around him, including Salah. It’s not a major worry for me just yet, but certainly not the start to life I’d envisaged for him at Anfield.Frimpong has experienced an interesting start to his own Liverpool career, with a debut goal seemingly the ideal start, but the injury and subsequent form have led to uncertainty. It says a lot when Szoboszlai’s shift to right-back was the most welcome move of the afternoon.HENRY: Honestly, that first half was horrific to watch – barring Alisson, there was absolutely nothing to admire about it.I sometimes feel bad that I can be too harsh on Ibou – I do rate him most of the time – but he has done my head in for much of this season.Whether talk over his future is affecting him is up for debate, but so often, he looks awkward on the ball and clumsy in his decision-making.Guehi was exceptional for Palace, and had we signed him, Ibou may well have been on the bench.Kerkez’s decision to kick the ball out, leading to the throw-in that Nketiah scored from, was frankly dim, and I’m a little worried about his intelligence at times. As for Wirtz, I’m not overly concerned yet, but we need more from a £116 million player, even if he’s a young player finding his feet.He isn’t clicking at all with Mo, who is quiet in so many matches now that it’s a concern.I thought Liverpool were dreadful after 1-1, too – urgh…it was just not an enjoyable experience, was it? And how concerned are you about Liverpool’s form?DAN: This felt like the perfect week to shift to ‘Good, Bad and Ugly’, but here we are! While much of the above would suggest a serious panic is required, we’ve seen this all before from successful Liverpool sides, and although we’ve hardly set the world alight this season, I still retain it’s a matter of time. That said, several individuals will need to start performing soon, otherwise, those seemingly destined to exist on the fringes of the squad will be banging down Slot’s door with good reason.HENRY: It seems odd to say it, but we haven’t genuinely played well in a single game yet this season. And didn’t for a chunk of the second half of last season, too!I’m getting frustrated by seeing the same mistakes every week, from slow starts to being too easy to score against from set-pieces.We are very much still title favourites, but I do think people have gone overboard about just how strong a favourites we are. Many of the new signings are young, and need to adjust to Slot’s tactics, and there is also the huge factor of this squad dealing with Jota’s death. It cannot be downplayed how much that may be affecting some players. One defeat shouldn’t cause a meltdown – champions lose games away to good teams, shock horror! – but big improvements are needed.
