(Express Photo)Jailed Sikh militant Jagtar Singh Hawara’s bedridden mother has appealed to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, seeking the release of her son on regular parole from Mandoli Central Jail in the national capital, where is serving life imprisonment for the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.Rekha Gupta’s office has forwarded the request made by Narinder Kaur, 81, to Home Minister Ashish Sood. A similar representation has been given to the National Commission for Minorities Chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura.Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht, has also appealed to the Government to give parole to Hawara.Narinder Kaur cited her son’s continuous imprisonment for more than 27 years following his conviction in 1995 Beant Singh murder case, which had resulted in a death sentence, later commuted to life imprisonment by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.Jagtar Singh Hawara has faced 36 cases. He was convicted in seven of the cases, acquitted in 22 cases, discharged in two cases, and five cases were disposed of. He escaped from Burail jail in Chandigarh in 2004 and was recaptured in 2005.Jagtar Singh Hawara was appointed parallel jathedar of the Akal Takht during 2015 Sarbat Khalsa.Narinder Kaur emphasised that her son’s co-accused had already received parole and referenced the support of the village panchayat, which has recommended his release and assured the maintenance of peace during his parole.Story continues below this adIn her plea, Narinder Kaur listed reasons including her own deteriorating health, broken family ties due to long separation, the need for home repairs, and the desire for her son to pursue his pending Supreme Court appeal.She stressed that no other case was pending against Jagtar Singh Hawara and argued that he fulfilled all requirements for parole. Her request is pending with the authorities in Delhi, awaiting a decision to allow Hawara temporary release on humanitarian grounds.Hawara submitted an application for regular parole to the jail superintendent on June 11, 2025. The application has been pending in the office of director-general (prisons) and the competent authority to grant regular parole is the deputy secretary home (general) of the National Capital Territory, New Delhi.On Thursday, Jathedar Gargaj paid a special visit to the militant’s home in Hawara village, where he met Narinder Kaur and inquired about her health.Story continues below this adJathedar Gargajj asked the Government of India to grant temporary parole to Hawara so that he may meet his aged mother in keeping with the principles of human rights and humanitarian values.In his statement, Jathedar Gargaj said that Hawara had been incarcerated for a long period, while his mother’s health had significantly deteriorated.Jathedar Gargaj further said that any applications submitted by Hawara’s family seeking temporary parole must be approved without delay, arguing that it was purely a matter of human rights.Meanwhile, Hawara’s lawyer Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said, “If parole can be granted to the rapist like Gurmeet Ram Rahim, why can’t Hawara meet his bedridden 81-year-old mother ?”Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Rekha Gupta
