The authorities at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, are hopeful of reopening the major operation theatres in its surgical super-speciality, accident and emergency care block in the coming weeks. The building, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), was temporarily closed down after two fire outbreaks there in May. Services such as casualty, MRI scanning and CT scanning, which are offered on the ground floor and first floor of the building, were resumed on August 24. The wards on the second, third, and fourth floors, and the neurosurgery intensive care unit (ICU) were reopened a couple of days later. Minor operation theatres were also thrown open along with this. However, the services on the fifth floor and the surgical super-speciality section on the sixth floor are yet to be reopened. Sources said that repair works had been taken up in one of the operating theatres from where the minor fire outbreak was reported. A surgical pendant, which was damaged in the fire, had been replaced. A circuit breaker, which would prevent power flow to protect the equipment and also prevent fire outbreaks, was being installed, they said.It is learnt that public sector company HLL-HITES, which earlier served as the construction consultant for the building, is expected to submit a report to the State Electrical Inspectorate after the installation of the safety measures. Thereafter, the inspectorate will again check the facilities and issue a no-objection certificate to the MCH authorities. The official decision about fully reopening the major operation theatres will be taken subsequently.Published - September 28, 2025 07:56 pm IST
