(AP Photo/Altaf Qadri)Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India after they beat Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling Asia Cup final to win the trophy a record-extending ninth time. Modi mentioned Operation Sindoor in his post on X congratulating Suryakumar Yadav’s men soon after the conclusion of the match.“#OperationSindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same – India wins! Congrats to our cricketers,” said Modi in his tweet. Tilak Varma finished unbeaten on 69 off 53 balls while Rinku Singh remarkably hit the winning runs with a four off the only ball he faced all tournament long as India managed to recover from a horror start and chased down a target of 147. Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul helped India bundle out Pakistan for just 146 runs.#OperationSindoor on the games field.Outcome is the same – India wins!Congrats to our cricketers.— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) September 28, 2025This was the third time that India beat Pakistan in this year’s tournament, having won the group stage fixture by seven wickets and the Super Fours match by six. Both those games were ridiculously one-sided, unlike the final on Sunday which swung one way and then another.Pakistan rattled out 84 runs without losing a wicket in 9.3 overs. India rebounded, bowling out the adversaries for 146. Then, set aback by the wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in the space of eight balls, India had to fight back again. Abhishek was India’s tempo-setter in the tournament, Suryakumar is not in his most ominous touch but is arguably India’s finest ever batsman in the format.Soon, they found themselves at 20 for three before Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson resuscitated them with a 57-run stand of ice and fire. Sanju departed, but Tilak steered the side past choppy waters to etch the most defining moment of his career. This is the ninth time that India have won the Asia Cup, and the second time that they have won it in its T20I form. It is also their second consecutive title overall, having won the 2023 tournament as well which was played in the ODI format. Sri Lanka are the second most succesfull team of all time, having won the title six times. Pakistan have won it twice.Stay updated with the latest sports news across Cricket, Football, Chess, and more.
