A 21-year-old organ donor from Hyderabad, who was declared brain stem dead, gave a new lease of life to at least three people.According to a release from AIIMS Mangalagiri, the donor, I. Nagendra Kumar, a resident of Yousufguda, Hyderabad, was referred to the institute after a post-procedural rupture of a vein of Galen malformation, which led to an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). He had earlier undergone an external ventricular drain (EVD) placement and a decompressive craniotomy.Despite all possible medical interventions, Nagendra was declared brain stem dead on September 29. Following written consent from his parents, AIIMS Mangalagiri facilitated its third brain stem dead organ donation. Both his kidneys were transplanted into two recipients at AIIMS Mangalagiri. His liver was transported to Aster Ramesh Hospitals, Guntur, for transplantation, and his corneas were preserved at L.V. Prasad Eye Bank, Vijayawada, to help restore vision for those in need.Doctors felicitated the donor’s family in recognition of their humanitarian act, which extended the lives of multiple patients.Published - September 30, 2025 10:47 pm IST
