(Source: AP)US President Donald Trump said he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, offering assurances that he’d block the move that Arab leaders in the region have opposed.Speaking in the Oval Office while signing unrelated executive orders, Trump said,” I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. It’s not going to happen,” he told reporters. “There’s been enough. It’s time to stop now.”This comes as Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House on Monday, his fourth trip to Washington since Trump’s second term began in January.Israel’s current government opposes Palestinian statehood and supports eventual annexation, a position that has drawn alarm from Arab states.International moves & peace planSeveral countries including Britain, France, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognised a Palestinian state this week to bolster prospects for a two-state solution. Israel condemned the moves. Germany withheld support for recognition but halted some military exports to Israel.French President Emmanuel Macron, who met Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, also said that the US President assured him that the Israeli annexation of the West Bank would be a red line for Washington.The United States shared a 21-point peace proposal at the UN General Assembly with officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan. Trump said he had held talks with regional leaders and Netanyahu. “We want the hostages back, we want the bodies back and we want to have peace in that region,” he said.Story continues below this adIntensified strikesThis comes as Israel expanded operations in Gaza City and intensified strikes, with at least 19 people killed on Thursday, according to local health authorities. The war has lasted nearly two years and killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, with parts of the territory in famine, Reuters reported.
