The Ministry of Railway on Tuesday has sanctioned the proposal for 10.5 km Rail-Over-Rail at Dornakal Junction. The project is estimated to cost around ₹320 crore and lies on the Vijayawada–Kazipet third line section, which falls on the saturated grand-trunk route. The proposal for quadrupling of Vijayawada–Kazipet section is in the pipeline. Trains at this junction ply towards Bhadrachalam road in addition to Kazipet, Vijayawada direction. A bypass line has been constructed to facilitate train movement between Vijayawada and Bhadrachalam at Dornakal junction. However, train movement from Vijayawada towards Bhadrachalam will have to go through surface crossing resulting in detention of trains. Now, the Rail-Over-Rail proposed at Dornakal will avoid cross movement of trains moving to Bhadrachalam Road from Vijayawada via Dornakal. This will avoid detention of trains and facilitate seamless movement of trains in the section. The work when completed will help in decongesting the vital section by improving the line capacity, paving the way for introduction / operation of more number of trains, said a press release.Published - September 30, 2025 08:56 pm IST
