Elon Musk and Donald Trump are best buddies again, and it’s because of Grok AI

Just a few months after a public falling out, it looks like the Elon Musk and Donald Trump friendship has been rekindled over a new deal with the Trump administration to bring Grok AI to the federal government. This whole thing seems to stem from the General Services Administration’s (GSA) new partnership with Elon Musk’s xAI. The GSA, which manages a lot of the government’s real estate, procurement, and tech services, announced that federal agencies will now have access to Grok 4 and Grok 4 Fast. This move is being touted as a way to streamline federal workflow in a cost-effective way. According to Fox, GSA’s federal acquisition service commissioner, Josh Gruenbaum, believes this widespread access to AI models is an “essential” tool. He said it not only fulfills Trump’s promise for the U.S. to win the AI race but also helps build “the efficient, accountable government that taxpayers deserve”. The GSA press release also mentions that federal agencies can start using the Grok AI models immediately. Money can heal all wounds when it comes to Trump and Musk Musk himself had a lot to say about the deal. In a statement to Fox News Digital, he claimed that “xAI has the most powerful AI compute and most capable AI models in the world”. He went on to say that “Thanks to President Trump and his administration, xAI’s frontier AI is now unlocked for every federal agency empowering the U.S. Government to innovate faster and accomplish its mission more effectively than ever before”. Musk also added, “We look forward to continuing to work with President Trump and his team to rapidly deploy AI throughout the government for the benefit of the country”. It sounds like the two are definitely back on the same page. As part of the deal, xAI engineers will provide full support to “accelerate the adoption of Grok to transform government operations”. Ross Nordeen, a cofounder of xAI, said that “‘Grok for Government’ will deliver transformational AI capabilities at $0.42 per agency for 18 months”. He also said that xAI will work “hand in glove with the entire government to not only deploy AI, but to deeply understand the needs of our government to make America the world leader in advanced use of AI”. Gruenbaum told Fox News Digital that xAI “stood out” as a strong partner because of its “world class technical talent”. He also expressed the importance of ensuring that “Western, American values are front and center” in these systems, especially since they are still in the “human-augmentation phase”. This new agreement is the final “frontier model” to be unveiled as part of the GSA’s “OneGov Strategy”. It will also provide agencies with an “upgrade path” to the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program. Gruenbaum found it “impressive” that they were able to get “all these frontier models onto the GSA schedules” so quickly. He added that this deal is “the best value yet, and with the longest duration. That’s a big deal”. This new partnership follows the launch of a new tool by the GSA last month to help agencies implement AI. It also aligns with the Trump administration’s “AI Action Plan,” which was rolled out in July after Trump’s order in January to develop a plan to “solidify our position as the global leader in AI”.
