There are six meetings for punters to study on Friday, headed up by the second day of a cracking three days of sport at Newmarket. Haydock, Newcastle and Dundalk provide more Flat racing, while National Hunt followers can pour over cards at Worcester and Listowel.Newmarket’s seven-race card offers some high-class action with three group races and two listed contests no less, highlighted by the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes for juvenile fillies and Group 2 Joel Stakes for three-year-olds plus. Our expert, Peter Entwistle, has a trio of selections on the day including one in the two feature events and another at Haydock. She’s also bred to be very smart too and bright times surely lie ahead. As befits a race of this nature there are lots of others who bring potential, not least the unexposed duo of The Prettiest Star and Samra Queen. But Sir Mark Prescott’s Moon Target, who wasn’t seen to anything like best effect when seventh in Doncaster’s May Hill Stakes, could emerge as the main danger. 3.00 Newmarket – Opera BalloSeven are due to go to post for the Group 2 Joel Stakes over a mile but it will come as a big surprise if the finish isn’t fought out between the three-year-old pair of Opera Ballo and Zeus Olympios. Karl Burke’s exciting son of Night Of Thunder, Zeus Olympios, made it 3-3 in impressive fashion when bagging the Superior Mile at Haydock at the start of the month. There’s no doubting he has a fair bit more to offer, especially next season, but on this occasion he could find Opera Ballo that bit too strong.Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath colt has met with defeat only once in five starts when racing too freely and coming in sixth in the Craven Stakes here in the spring.Appleby was quick to fit him with a hood after that and two more sparkling successes in listed company have followed at Sandown and on the July course here.On the latter occasion he produced a really smart effort in quickening clear for a near three-length victory, clocking a fast time in the process, and he looks capable of contesting Group 1 events should he get the chance later this autumn.4.35 Haydock – LeadmanOne of the best bets of the day could lie in this seven-furlong handicap where 12 line up but one really stands out in the shape of Leadman.David O’Meara’s five-year-old remains low mileage for his age and has been campaigned in typically shrewd style since being picked up from Andrew Balding. His first victory for his current yard came in a strong handicap at Newmarket’s July meeting but other than an excellent second in another good handicap at Newbury, he has suffered little luck in running. His most recent start in a big-field Ascot handicap saw him scuppered by a high draw but he was noted travelling really well for much of the way and his final placing of 12th bears no reflection on how well he performed. The official handicapper eased him 2lb in the weights for that effort and he now figures on an attractive mark.Stablemate Lord Bertie and top-weight Persuasion both command plenty of respect but Leadman gets a confident vote to gain an overdue second success for the O’Meara team. talkSPORT BET welcome offer – Get £35 in free bets18+ New Customers.
