Jarred Gillett, who is barred from officiating Liverpool games due to him being a fan, has been involved with Arsenal games 3 times already this season. Darren England, who is on VAR, handed Everton a penalty to Everton back in April that was absolutely never a penalty in a game which saw Arsenal drop 2 points due to a terrible refereeing call. In the same game, England gave out a yellow card following a VAR check which is explicitly not supposed to happen based on the rules of VAR. βπΌ Pre-Match Ramblings This is a fixture that I dread every time it rolls around, and unfortunately it rolled around more often than it needed to last season and Newcastle embarassed us out of the EFL cup 4-0 on aggregate last season in the Semi-Finals. Something about St. James' Park just makes me nervous. Between the away fans being a mile away from the pitch, the referee bottling it to the crowd every single time, and the brash style of play that Newcastle adhere to, just makes me lack confidence every time. Our team is still figuring out what and who it is this season. Yes, we've had some good results, but we've had more worrying performances than wins. Mikel Arteta seems to be wedded to a midfield of Zubimendi, Rice, and Merino in the absence of Odegaard (who I suspect will be on the bench on Sunday), which fans and pundits all seem to be in agreement that does not work. I can see this midfield starting yet again against Newcastle, mainly because Zubimendi may struggle with the physicality that Newcastle employ. A bit more on team selection: Eze has to start this game. Given what I just said about midfield selection, this will have to be on the left. Eze prefers not to be a touchline winger, and thrives in the half spaces where you would expect our left 8 to occupy - this means the left back should be the one providing width to our attack. Can Calafiori provide this? Maybe, but he has been excellent in the free-roaming role he has been afforded this season. The players available in various areas of the pitch seem to be at odds with the strength of the players available. Could Arteta bench Declan Rice to make room for Eze in his favoured position? Newcastle have one (1) win so far this season, and it was against last place Wolves at SJP. They will be desperate to get going, and who better to do it against than an Arsenal team currently going through an identity crisis. Newcastle are always up for this fixture, as are their fans. Although a strange switch occured over the summer where Newcastle fans started hating Liverpool more than they loathed Arsenal, so perhaps the atmosphere will differ given the context of the title race. https://anditsarsenal.com/2025/09/26/newcastle-vs-arsenal-28th-september-2025-premier-league-match-preview/ submitted by /u/Mahoganychicken [link] [comments]
