She earned her PhD in Social Work from the University of Chicago in 1969. Prof Desai began her academic career at Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work in Mumbai where she taught from 1957 to 1982, eventually becoming Vice Principal.She served as Director of TISS from 1982 to 1995, leading the institute through a period of significant growth and innovation. From 1995 to 1999, she chaired the UGC.Mourning her passing, the TISS, on its official social media handles called her a pioneering leader in social work and higher education. “Her legacy will live on in generations she inspired,” it added.Remembering Prof Desai and her contribution to the academic sector, the post further stated, “She contributed extensively to the development of social work education and higher education policy in India, while also engaging with global organisations such as the UN, Commonwealth Secretariat, and Planning Commission committees.
