It looked like Liverpool had salvaged a point, but it was the Reds’ turn to concede a late, late winner.Isak’s first league start – a ‘new’ role for WirtzAlexander Isak was the only player to remain in the side from the XI that started in the Carabao Cup, that being due to Hugo Ekitike‘s suspension. The biggest change, though, was Florian Wirtz‘s role from the left of attack rather than No.10, meaning a return for the regular midfield from last season. The Reds’ shape was somewhat 4-2-2-2.Palace dominate first half, Alisson savesA good delivery on a corner in the seventh minute saw Ismaila Sarr tap in the opening goal for the home side. Arne Slot received a booking for contesting the awarding of the corner for the goal, which replays showed clearly shouldn’t have been given.A superb save from Alisson three minutes later denied Palace a second.Liverpool had a good opportunity shortly after, but decided to let Mo Salah take the free kick so that didn’t result in a goal.It needed another Alisson save to deny Daniel Muniz, then Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Liverpool struggling against Oliver Glasner’s well-coached side who went into the game 17 unbeaten.Palace could easily have been 4-0 up. Konate was all over the show and was booked for a foul on Mateta.Liverpool’s best chance fell to Konate from a corner but he headed wide.Palace went close again, Sarr hitting the side netting. Mateta hit the post in stoppage time then volleyed over.A half time score of 5-0 wouldn’t have flattered the home side. Surely Liverpool wouldn’t be so bad in the second half.Half time: Crystal Palace 1-0 LiverpoolYet another late goal saves the dayCody Gakpo replaced Conor Bradley at the interval, with Dominik Szoboszlai moving to right back.Liverpool looked better, not that they could have looked much worse, and Gakpo fired one effort wide.Wirtz had a good opportunity from close range before the hour but didn’t get enough on it. Isak steered an effort wide after some good footwork, then headed over another chance.Slot opted for his regular attacking wildcard by replacing Konate and putting Gravenberch to centre back. Isak remained on to the 84th minute, while the disappointing Wirtz was hooked. The two £100 million men struggled to make an impact.Szoboszlai had a shot that looked goal-bound, only for Salah to opt to get his foot on it and divert it over the bar.Yet again, though, Liverpool found a goal late on, substitute Federico Chiesa scoring from close range in the 87th minute. But this time it was the opposition who won it in stoppage time as Eddie Nketiah fired home a 97th-minute winner. In all honesty, Liverpool didn’t deserve anything.TIA Man of the Match: Alisson
