R Disaster Runs Off to Facile Gallant Bloom Victory at Big A

Wait 5 sec.

Despite having already proven herself to be the model of consistency, R Disaster came into Saturday's GII Gallant Bloom Stakes still in search of her initial win at the graded level. However, the 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Slew was able to check that off her list with a confident score in the 6 1/2-furlong test at the Big A.Senza Parole (Gun Runner) got the jump at the start, however, the even-money choice also benefitted from a clean break and soon found herself at the head of affairs. Racing through an opening quarter mile in a crisp :22.10 with Senza Parole and Patricia Ann in hot pursuit, the favorite continued to show the way through a :44.73 half mile.In the clear and still motoring under Jose Ortiz, R Disaster continued to dominate late, running off to a 4 1/2-length winner over Patricia Ann. Sterling Silver rounded out the Trifecta.“She broke very alert and obviously she's always very good from the gate,” said Ortiz. “We got the one hole–that helps a lot. She was traveling very nice every step of the way and she was much the best. I give her all the credit today–the connections, Saffie…I was just the passenger. Just break good, make sure to call her at the right time. She was traveling very easy and I was very happy throughout the race.”A former claimer, the Florida-bred boosted her game when winning her 4-year-old debut in a Gulfstream optional claimer in January. A close-up second in the 6 1/2-furlong GIII Hurricane Bertie at that venue in March, she again had to play the bridesmaid in the May 4 GIII Vagrancy in New York.Favored when cutting back a sixteenth for Delaware's Rehoboth Stakes May 31, the Saffie Joseph Jr.  trainee ran off to score by 6 1/2 lengths. Well supported in a sloppy renewal of the GII Honorable Miss at the Spa July 20, she found Halina's Forte a half-length too good, but bounced back to score next time over that track and trip while facing $100,000 optional claiming company on Aug. 20.The filly is campaigned by Averill Racing, operated by Florida-based construction company operator Rich Averill, Two Eight Racing, the Nom-de-course of former Major League player Jayson Werth, and racing handicapper Anthony Mattera.“You always say, 'well if she throws a clunker today, she has already done so much for us.' We're not big-time owners, and she's a horse of a lifetime for me,” said Mattera. “It's incredible. Saffie [Joseph, Jr., trainer] is very transparent with us where he tells us where he thinks she has the best chance to win. We want to go out there and win stakes races, and this was impressive today. Jose [Ortiz] did a great job.”Asked about a potential start on Breeders' Cup Day, Mattera added, “I don't think so. We'll gather and talk about it as a team, but I don't think so. If Kopion goes the to Distaff and Sweet Azteca skips it, maybe we'd consider it. It's on the table” Pedigree Notes:R Distaster was bred in Florida Michael O'Farrell Jr. and Ocala Stud, where sire Awesome Slew currently stands. With Saturday's victory, the filly becomes her sire's second graded stakes winner.A former claimer, Making Havoc was also bred by Ocala Stud and campaigned by Averill Racing, who purchased the daughter of Gottcha Gold for $55,000 at the OBS April Sale in 2012. Making Havoc's most recent progeny include a juvenile colt by Adios Charlie in addition to a yearling filly by Colonel Liam. She was bred back to the latter on her latest cover. Saturday, Belmont The Big AGALLANT BLOOM S.-GII, $250,000, Belmont The Big A, 9-27, 3yo/up, f/m, 6 1/2f, 1:14.78, ft.1–R DISASTER, 123, f, 4, by Awesome Slew              1st Dam: Making Havoc, by Gottcha Gold              2nd Dam: Marion Theatre, by Montbrook              3rd Dam: Velvet Choaker, by On to Glory   1ST BLACK TYPE WIN, 1ST GRADED STAKES WIN.
