Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca says his side “cannot continue to give away presents” after losing a second consecutive Premier League game in which they received a red card. The Blues were in control of the opening 50 minutes of their encounter with Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, dominating possession and enjoying the better chances.Enzo Fernandez gave the hosts a deserved lead when he headed home from close range in the 25th minute. From there Chelsea should have coasted to victory, but Trevoh Chalobah was sent off shortly after the interval when he took down Diego Gomez just outside the penalty area. The red card completely flipped the game on its head as the Seagulls went on to win 3-1, with two of their goals coming in stoppage time. Maxime de Cuyper scored either side of a Danny Welbeck brace. It comes just a week after Robert Sanchez was sent off as Chelsea lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford. The west London outfit have received 18 cards in total in the opening six weeks of the season, the joint-most in the top flight.“For sure you cannot continue to make mistakes, also because they are big mistakes in terms of game changes, the red card at Manchester United and the red card today,” Maresca admitted in his post-match press conference.“Then after that we tried to adjust a little bit with Josh Acheampong coming on, and he was ill over the last week. Josh, in that moment, our two central defenders were Josh and Jorrel [Hato], that both are for sure fantastic players, fantastic talents, but not so many games in the Premier League, so when you are with 10 players it’s a moment that you have to manage the situation. When it was put to Maresca that his players should avoid getting wound up when things go against them, he responded: “The message that we just said inside has been quite clear: against any team in the Premier League you cannot continue to give away presents, because what we are doing in this moment is to give away presents in terms of red cards, that is a big mistake because the game completely changed.Read More – Power Rankings: New leader as PSG tumbleSee Also – Ranking the worst Premier League away kits in 2025/26Follow The Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTokThe post Chelsea ‘can’t keep giving away presents’ as red card proves costly again first appeared on The Football Faithful.
