Frank Lampard was forced to contend with a bizarre injury during Coventry City’s pre-season schedule this summer.The Sky Blues boss was without midfielder Josh Eccles until last weekend’s draw with Leicester. Eccles had been sidelined since their Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Sunderland in May.His injury absence saw the 25-year-old miss the first seven matches of the new season across all competitions.What initially started as a dead leg in their defeat to the Black Cats resulted in an extra bone growing in his left leg, he has revealed.Eccles, who came off the bench against the Foxes on Saturday, told the BBC: “It was a bizarre injury.“I managed to get a dead leg twice in the same place within five minutes of each other and I got forced off.“A dead leg takes two weeks maximum to recover, but it got to the third week and the pain was getting worse so I messaged the physio staff to get a scan.“There was so much blood around the bone, the body’s natural instinct is to start healing, and because it was so close to the bone the body thought it was bone that needed repairing so the blood turned into bone.“So technically right now in my left leg there’s an extra bone that’s been growing for two months.”Eccles has made 163 appearances for Coventry since graduating from the club’s academy.Eccles on his injury recoveryHowever, he admits his he feared the freak injury could impact his performances despite his return to the pitch.Eccles was left with an extra bone growing in his leg after a bizarre injury setbackShutterstockThe Coventry midfielder was sidelined after suffering a dead leg against Sunderland in MayShutterstockHe added: “It was really painful at the time and there wasn’t a lot I could do in the off-season.“Even lifting my leg at the time was super-painful, but it’s weird how it’s suddenly healed and I’m not aware of it now.“With injuries you feel when the pain isn’t going away, is this going to be for the rest of my career or will it affect me?“The more you train the more you forget about it and the pain has gone now so I’m back to normal.“In my game I’m a bit aggressive but I thought this injury could stop me.“But playing the other day I still had that aggressiveness in me and it’ll always be a part of me.”Eccles made his return last weekend after missing the first seven matches of the seasonShutterstockEccles signed a contract extension through to the summer of 2028 back in November prior to his injury lay-off.He will be hoping to follow up his 14-minute cameo against Leicester with another appearance this weekend.Coventry host Birmingham at the CBS Arena on Saturday afternoon.Lampard’s side go into the match unbeaten in sixth place, having won twice and drawn four of their opening six fixtures.
