Viktor Hovland’s injury could have some unintended consequences for one Team USA star at the Ryder Cup.The Norwegian pulled out of the Saturday afternoon fourballs due to a neck injury believed to have been sustained celebrating a putt on the 17th hole.Keegan Bradley could be forced into a strange decisionGettyTyrrell Hatton took his place as Team Europe look to put themselves on course to make history and retain their title by reaching 14 points.Hatton partnered Matt Fitzpatrick rather than having a rest. But if in the unlikely event Hovland can’t play in the singles on Sunday, we will have a very odd situation. What happens if Hovland can’t play?If Hovland’s injury keeps him out of the singles, there is a system in place that would see one member of Team USA miss out. This would then mean the singles are 11 versus 11 rather than 12 versus 12, and the American player to miss out has already been chosen. This is because before the tournament started, each captain, Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald had to pick one member of their 12-man squad and put the name in an envelope. This name would be the player to miss out, and the interesting things is Bradley has already chosen who that player is.So, it’s nothing to do with form from the weekend so far. If it were, he’d have plenty of names to choose from because Team USA have been blitzed by Team Europe. But the name Bradley has picked will be the player that before the tournament started, he thought would be the least capable in the singles. Therefore, we could see a very awkward moment if Hovland isn’t fit to play.Hovland suffered the injury during his win over Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley with Robert MacIntyreGettyWhat is the latest on Hovland? There has been no official update from Donald on Hovland, but the Norwegian wasn’t spotted on the course watching his teammates until near the end of the day.But after a night of rest, he could be raring to go if the injury isn’t serious. The suggestions from Sky Sports are that it isn’t.Sky Sports News’ Jamie Weir said: “The neck injury for Viktor Hovland is just precautionary, I can report. I have had it confirmed to me that he will be fine for singles tomorrow.“That’s why Tyrell Hatton was drafted in at the last minute, but Hovland will be absolutely fine for the singles.“We’ll have no envelope situation where Keegan Bradley has to stand on one of his team as well.”So, unless something drastically changes overnight, Hovland is expected to be playing in the singles. As it stands, Hovland should be fine to playGettyHow are things shaping up?Team Europe are absolutely smashing Team USA and are on course for the biggest lead by a Ryder Cup team going into the last day in its 98-year history. The Europeans have totally outclassed their American counterparts despite torrents of abuse coming their way.But as Donald said on Saturday afternoon, his team have shown remarkable skill and mental fortitude. He said: “We saw two years ago, our superstars – Viktor [Hovland], Jon [Rahm], Rory [McIlroy] all made a lot of points not playing together.“You need your superstars to perform at their highest, and they have certainly shown up so far.“Every point matters. We’ve got a lot more points to go. “We’ve got four really strong groups and we’re excited to see how [the rest of the week] goes.”Following his morning win, Fleetwood said: “We played phenomenally well for 12 holes and then for the next few holes it was like one shot away from the match being over.“I made a hash of a couple of things. I just think where we put ourselves made it very difficult for them.“They played great towards the end there but having that buffer, that lead help massively. And then Rory hit that shot on the last and that was good.”
