New listings also dropped 1.1% month-over-month, and almost 3% year-over-year.That’s because, as Redfin’s Chen Zhao explained, unease over housing costs and the overall economy is now impacting sellers in addition to buyers. He added that he expects 2025 home sales to finish at 2024 levels, “which was the worst year for sales since 1995.”And though the median home sale price did jump 1.7% year over year to $440,004, Zhao said the silver lining lies in falling mortgage rates, which could open the door to “a significant bump in sales” if they continue downward.Even better, one Redfin agent believes that hopeful young buyers are within reach of a “magic” mortgage rate that could make their home ownership dreams a reality. Here’s what the magic number is, and what you can do to prepare to enter the mortgage market. Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Prospective homebuyers are paying attention to mortgage rates, and if they drop to 6%, I think we’ll see a flood of interest.”The August Redfin report showed that the average mortgage rate has dropped to a year-long low of 6.26% (the September federal interest rate cut was factored into the percentages), so buyers are finding themselves closer to that magic number than they’ve been in years.Of course, 6% is still a long way from the 30-year fixed-rate of 2.96% homebuyers enjoyed in 2021 — the lowest rate in more than 50 years. But as Mortgage Reports explained, the average rate dating back to 1971 is almost 8%, so waiting for ultra-low 2021 levels isn’t realistic. Plus, they noted, “slower price growth, more inventory, and stronger negotiating power … are shifting in buyers’ favor” [2].Terms and Privacy PolicyPrivacy & Cookie SettingsMore InfoS&P 5006,643.70 +38.98 (+0.59%)Dow 3046,247.29 +299.97 (+0.65%)Nasdaq22,484.07 +99.37 (+0.44%)Russell 20002,434.32 +23.28 (+0.97%)VIX15.29 -1.45 (-8.66%)Gold3,809.00 +37.90 (+1.01%)PortfolioSign in to access your portfolioSign inTop gainersCRNX Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, Inc. 45.91 +10.02 (+27.92%)QMMM QMMM Holdings Limited 119.40 +19.40 (+19.40%)EA Electronic Arts Inc. 193.35 +25.03 (+14.87%)SRRK Scholar Rock Holding Corporation 38.75 +4.26 (+12.35%)PPTA Perpetua Resources Corp. 21.16 +2.16 (+11.37%)Top losersCNXC Concentrix Corporation 47.66 -7.33 (-13.33%)MP MP Materials Corp. 68.63 -8.50 (-11.02%)KC Kingsoft Cloud Holdings Limited 15.64 -1.83 (-10.48%)IREN IREN Limited 41.86 -4.43 (-9.57%)OKLO Oklo Inc. 110.53 -8.60 (-7.22%)Most activeINTC Intel Corporation 35.50 +1.51 (+4.44%)OPEN Opendoor Technologies Inc. 8.81 -0.28 (-3.08%)SNAP Snap Inc. 8.27 -0.06 (-0.72%)NVDA NVIDIA Corporation 178.19 +0.50 (+0.28%)F Ford Motor Company 12.01 +0.39 (+3.36%)Earnings eventsMy earnings eventsEarnings eventsTrending tickersFWONK Formula One Group 104.93 +0.97 (+0.93%)BTC-USD Bitcoin USD 109,521.34 +118.05 (+0.11%)PPL PPL Corporation 36.72 +0.56 (+1.55%)XRP-USD XRP USD 2.79 +0.02 (+0.67%)ETH-USD Ethereum USD 4,006.04 -8.60 (-0.21%)Top economic eventsPowered by Money.com - Yahoo may earn commission from the links above.
