(File Photo)Houses were damaged, several Garba pandals set up on open grounds collapsed even as crop loss was reported across Valsad and Navsari districts after heavy rains accompanied by high-speed winds continued to lash several parts of Gujarat on Wednesday. Both district collectors have set up teams to assess the damage.As per initial reports, at least 1500 houses in Navsari district were either completely or partially damaged, said the officials. The districts saw some relief on Monday with the rain reducing in intensity.Navsari District Collector Kshipra Agre told The Indian Express, “There was no warning of heavy rainfall with high-speed winds. We have set up teams to assess the damage caused in multiple talukas and villages across the district”.“The horticulture sector has suffered major damage with Mango and Chikoo crops being uprooted. Over 1,500 houses in the villages have been partially or fully damaged. We are assessing the damage reported from the agriculture and horticulture sectors. No human casualties have been reported so far,” Agre said.Valsad District Collector Bhavya Verma said, “ At many places boats, even the ones which were anchored, were damaged. Due to the heavy rain, trees were also uprooted and electric poles were destroyed in multiple areas”.“The repair work is in progress. It will take us a couple of two days to assess the entire damage. We will prepare our report and send it to the state government. No human casualties have been reported in the district so far,” Verma added.According to the officials, some Garba pandals which had been set up on open grounds collapsed due to the high-speed winds and rain that started late Saturday night. The damage to electric poles led to blackouts in certain areas of both districts late Saturday, said sources.
