The First Additional Sessions District Court of Kozhikode sentenced Roopesh from Karikkamkulam in the city to life imprisonment in a murder case in August 2021.Roopesh had stabbed one Rajeevan while trying to shut down the fish vending business of Sahir Ali at Kanhiramukku near Karikkamkulam on August 20, 2021. Rajeevan had intervened to save Ali, and in the scuffle, both of them got injured. Rajeevan died at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital later.The prosecution, represented by public prosecutor Shamsudhin N. and Rashmi Ram, presented 43 witnesses, 47 documents, and 10 pieces of evidence during the trial, based on which district judge N.R. Krishnakumar issued the verdict.Roopesh was sentenced to life imprisonment, besides being slapped with a fine of ₹1 lakh. He was also awarded seven years’ imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 for the attempted murder of Ali. Besides, he was asked to pay ₹1 lakh as victim compensation to the family of Rajeevan and ₹25,000 to Sahir Ali.
