By Mulengera ReportersSusan Namata, a Makerere law student has emerged winner for the NUP ticket to serve as district Woman MP for Kalungu. Namata, who even tried last time, is also a Rotarian. The seat is currently being occupied by Minister Aisha Ssekindi who managed to win even when Bobi Wine’s NUP defeated all the NRM candidates in 2021 including the President YK Museveni, Minister Vincent Ssempijja for Kalungu East. Kalungu West was also lost to NUP’s Joseph Sewungu whose Kavule-based party also defeated NRM for the position of LC5 Chairman Kalungu district. Majority councillors are NUP’s too and NRM is now on the offensive in Kalungu which used to be their territory and stronghold. Namata has had to overcome veteran politician Aisha Waliggo and other equally capable women who wanted the NUP ticket. Her winning chances in the general elections are high given that the NRM camp is already split up into the antagonistic Sempijja and Ssekindi camps whose members seem to have irreconcilable differences. During a recent harmonization meeting new NRM Buganda region CEC representative and Chairman Haruna Kasolo convened at Hotel Africana in Kampala, the young lady who won the NRM flag bearer race complained about Ssekindi’s refusal to bow out in her favour. She/flag bearer pleaded with AG Kiwanuka Kiryowa imploring him to help convince the President to prevail and force Ssekindi out if at all the ruling party is to ever stand any chance against NUP second wave in Kalungu which is part of Greater Masaka where Bobi Wine’s support remains strong as ever.
