NHRC seeks report on death of two persons due to asphyxiation in Tiruchi

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner and Superintendent of Police calling for a report into an incident in which two sanitation workers died due to asphyxiation.The Commission took suo motu cognisance of a media report which said two sanitation workers died due to asphyxiation on September 22 while working on a newly-constructed underground drainage pipeline near Carmel Garden in the Muthunagar area of Tiruverumbur in Tiruchi district.“The Commission said the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violation,” an official release said. It called for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. “It is expected to include the status of the investigation and compensation, if any, paid to the next of kin of the deceased workers,” it said.Published - September 29, 2025 09:32 pm IST
