(Source: File)Cracking the whip on enumerators failing to take part in the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey carried out by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, the state government suspended four people Saturday.Three were suspended in the Davanagere district, and one in the Raichur district, for failing to conduct the survey in their assigned blocks. In Davanagere, teachers D K Manjunath and H Basavarajappa, along with K R Durgappa, the superintendent of a post-matric hostel, were suspended. Meanwhile, Ramesh G Rathod, the welfare officer of the Backward Classes Department, was suspended in the Raichur district. The suspension orders came a day after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with DCs and CEOs of all districts, and directed action against teachers and other government staff not participating in the survey.Following the meeting, the enumeration exercise has picked pace across the state. According to details shared by the Chief Ministers’ Office, a total of 4.68 lakh households were enumerated from the start of the survey on September 22 till September 26. However, on September 27 alone, 8.18 lakh households (as of 5.30 pm Saturday) were enumerated. However, sources in the Commission said that the final tally of households surveyed on Saturday was 9.64 lakh. However, the government has set a daily target of 11.85 lakh households for 1.18 lakh enumerators assigned to the survey. The government has estimated the target households at 1.43 crore and has divided them into 1.22 lakh blocks. The survey was commissioned by the state government earlier this year, following its decision to discontinue the previous survey conducted by the Commission in 2015. Although the government stated that the data was a decade old, which hindered the implementation of its recommendations, speculation was that the exercise was scrapped due to opposition from communities such as the Vokkaligas and Veerashaiva Lingayats. The survey carried out at a cost of Rs 420 crore is scheduled to be held until October 9.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:BengaluruKarnataka
