Today, Donald Trump and his flunky Pete Hegseth gathered the nation’s top military brass and delivered two speeches destined to go down in history as some of the craziest the Pentagon has ever seen. Hegseth, reportedly in the middle of a manic episode, practically frothed at the mouth as he outlined his vision of a violent and masculine military, informing the crowd that he wants physically fit and attractive soldiers with no constraints on their actions in battle, saying he was focused on “maximum lethality”. The reaction was stunned and awkward silence from the top brass, who were invited to resign if they had any problems with Hegseth’s apocalyptic ravings. But Hegseth was merely an appetiser for the Trump main course. Trump took to the stage and commented on the shocked reaction to Hegseth’s ramblings, joking that he’s “never walked into a room so silent before” and opening with a threat: “if you don’t like what I’m saying, you can leave the room. Of course, there goes your rank, there goes your future.” The president then informed the military who their new enemies are: Americans. Trump vowed that the military will be used to fight “a war from within” and added that America is “under invasion from within”. He promised that he’ll increase military action against Democrat-controlled cities, saying his soldiers will “straighten them out one by one”. In an ominous warning to those in attendance who may have qualms about attacking their fellow Americans, he promised, “this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room.” Trump then casually said the military will be “going into Chicago very soon” and that Portland “looks like a war zone”. So, there we have the next cities on the chopping block for military discipline. So… this is martial law then? It’s safe to say there hasn’t been a speech quite like this since the Civil War. Even then, officials would sugarcoat discussing their attacks on American cities, rather than Trump’s gleeful eagerness to turn American soldiers against their own people. If Trump really is serious about fighting an “invasion” against America from a fuzzily defined adversary, expect this militarism to ramp up in ferocity over the coming months. Curfews, disappearances, and home invasions by soldiers may soon become facts of life for those living in Democrat-controlled cities. As for how Trump’s troops will deal with American citizens resisting him? He just wrote that he’s authorizing soldiers to use “full force”, giving license to soldiers to open fire on protestors. All this sounds insane, but we live in insane times.
