By: Express News ServiceAhmedabad | Updated: October 1, 2025 12:47 AM IST 3 min readEarlier this year, the Gujarat High Court had asked the police why they had not arrested Jani, to which the police replied that he had been on bed restNishidh Jani, a clerk at the government-run Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), who was arrested on September 17 for allegedly providing sensitive documents of the board to journalist Mahesh Langa, died shortly after he was admitted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Monday night, police said.The Gandhinagar Police, which is investigating the case based on the FIR filed on October 22, 2024, had named Langa as prime accused in the alleged theft and possession of confidential documents of the GMB.DySP DT Gohil of Gandhinagar City Division, who is investigating the case, said, “Jani was arrested on September 17, 2025, after investigation found he had given the documents to Langa. Jani was suffering from a lung-related ailment since January 2025 and was on sick leave since then. He rejoined GMB earlier in September. A day after his arrest, he was presented before court, which sent him to police custody for a day. He was sent to judicial custody on September 19 and had been in Sabarmati Central Jail since then.”DySP Gohil said that before Jani’s arrest, police had sought medical opinion from doctors at Gandhinagar Civil Hospital. “The doctors said that he was fit to be arrested as his CT scans were normal and his blood oxygen was 96, and only then did we arrest Jani,” the officer said, adding that Jani’s medical test was also conducted before sending him to judicial custody.Earlier this year, the Gujarat High Court had asked the police why they had not arrested Jani, to which the police replied that he had been on bed rest.An Accidental Death (AD) report was filed at Ranip police station in connection with Jani’s death, said Bharatkumar Rathod, DCP Zone-2, Ahmedabad City Police.Five FIRs against LangaLanga, who faces five FIRs since October 7 last year, got anticipatory bail in the case related to the GMB from the Gujarat High Court earlier this year and the Gandhinagar Police had approached the Supreme Court challenging the order. Though the matter was listed for September 18, the hearing did not take place. The case is now posted for October 14, 2025.Story continues below this adThe first FIR against Langa is in connection with his alleged involvement in running a benami firm, one of a network of 220 shell companies alleged to be involved in a nationwide GST fraud, primarily investigated by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI).The second FIR filed by Gandhinagar Police on October 22, 2024, accused Langa of theft and possession of confidential documents of the GMB.The third FIR was filed against Langa by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police for allegedly cheating a businessman to the tune of Rs 28.68 lakh.The fourth FIR, filed by the Rajkot Crime Branch through its Economic Offences Wing, was pertaining to the alleged evasion of GST.Story continues below this adThe fifth FIR, at Satellite police station in Ahmedabad on January 23, 2025, was filed based on a complaint by Janak Arjun Thakor, 32, a farmer and land broker by profession and resident of Daskroi taluka, in which Langa was booked for allegedly extorting the land broker of Rs 40 lakh.The Enforcement Directorate (ED) subsequently launched two investigations against the journalist based on the FIRs lodged by the crime branch.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Gujarat Police
