Mumbai: 13-year-old falls into open drain at Dombivali, dies

The incident took place around 10.30 pm on Sunday night. However, it triggered an array of protests in Kalyan district where local residents blamed the civic authorities for not covering the drains.Despite multiple attempts, Abhinav Goel–municipal commissioner from the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) didn’t respond to the queries raised by the Indian Express.The deceased–Ayush (13) was playing with his friends when he slipped into an open portion of a drain and got washed away. Sources in the KDMC said that first responders including fire brigade were pressed into action immediately after the incident. The rescue operation was carried out by installing rescue nets in one of the outflow of the storm water drains where the body got trapped.“The boy fell into the drain and got swept away. Since the intensity of rain was so heavy, the roads got inundated and one could barely see the open portals of the drain during the rescue operation. He was found 2 kilometres away, and about an hour later the doctors declared him dead,” said an official from KDMC.Following the incident, local residents staged protests outside the KDMC headquarters. The locals have demanded that a case of culpable homicide should be registered against the civic authorities.
