Spoilers below. In the season 1 finale of House of Guinness, tensions that have been bubbling up all season are ready to explode. The Guinness family is facing danger from the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who believe they aren’t doing anything for the cause of Irish independence; Arthur (Anthony Boyle) is in a heated race for a seat in Parliament and dealing with a crisis in his marriage; and Edward (Louis Partridge) is trying to run the business while maintaining peace in Dublin.Revolutionary Patrick Cochrane (Seamus O’Hara) has returned to Dublin after being sent to New York City as a condition of his release from prison, after he was arrested as part of a police crackdown on Irish rebels. He’s coming for the Guinnesses, who he believes are acting in direct opposition to the cause of Irish independence, as he knows that Edward was responsible for sending him to America. He goes to see his sister Ellen (Niamh McCormack), who is furious that he has returned home. He says that even in New York, he’s heard the rumors that she was in a relationship with Edward until he married someone else. She reminds Patrick that Edward was the one who made the deal that freed him from jail. He responds by letting her know that the Irish Brotherhood is targeting the upcoming election, in which Arthur is running to become a member of Parliament. Ellen begs him not to involve himself in any violence, even if it is for the cause, and writes to Edward to warn him.Edward stops by the campaign headquarters, where his cousin Byron Hedges (Jack Gleeson) is giving Arthur some dubious advice. Edward tells him that he’s got a tip that something violent is being planned. Sean Rafferty (James Norton), the Guinness foreman and overall enforcer for the family, goes out to ask around, but no one can confirm that Patrick has returned to Ireland. He explains this to Edward but says that were Patrick to have returned to Dublin with the Irish Brotherhood, he’d likely be on a mission to kill Arthur.Edward and Ellen have been on bad terms since he broke up with her and married his cousin Adelaide (Ann Skelly), but he goes to her home. Ellen is standoffish when he asks to speak and tells him that she doesn’t know where her brother is. He tells her that he loves her. When he returns to his office, he sees that Adelaide is waiting for him. She knows where he’s been and says she realizes that she is not the one he would have married had the decision been up to him.Ben Blackall/NetflixAnne, Adelaide, Aunt Agnes (Dervla Kirwan), and Christine (Jessica Reynolds), young Benjamin’s former girlfriend, are working at a campaign office for Arthur’s run when Benjamin comes in. Anne meets with him and Christine and lets them know she’s aware they’ve been having an affair, as they raised a particularly high hotel bill. Christine and Benjamin giggle while recounting the details and tell Anne that they love each other. Anne tells them that she’s willing to accept Christine as Benjamin’s official mistress. In the previous episode, Arthur learned that his wife, Olivia (Danielle Galligan), was pregnant as a result of her relationship with Sean Rafferty. This goes against their marital arrangement, which says they are both allowed to see people outside of the marriage, but that Olivia can never develop a more serious romantic connection. Arthur sends Olivia to London to get an abortion, and he is remarkably insensitive to her sadness when she returns. Arthur tells her that she’s free to leave him for Rafferty, but, under their agreement, she’d receive no financial support, Rafferty would lose his job, and she’d find the city of Dublin very hostile for a woman who walked out on her husband for another man.She agrees to his terms, and he says she must explain to Rafferty that she can no longer see him. Olivia speaks with him, but instead of ending things, she tells him she has a plan for them to continue seeing each other. They will meet each Wednesday at a place her cousin will allow them to use.Ben Blackall/NetflixArthur’s campaign continues, and he and Edward rehearse his speech for an upcoming rally, while Patrick is living in the woods and practicing his shooting. The day of the rally, the brothers gather with Benjamin and Anne. Edward tells Arthur that he has warned other family members that if they join Arthur on the rally stage, they might face violence. They all said they were willing to take that risk to support Arthur.Arthur tells his siblings how much better they all are now than they were when they sat in the same room waiting for their father’s will to be read. Benjamin has curbed his drinking, Anne has motivated the whole family to become devoted to charity, and Edward has taken the company global. His own growth can be seen in the fact that he now loves being a part of the Guinness family. He believes they have made their father proud. The siblings, all wearing black, descend the stairs of the home, mirroring the way they set out for their father’s funeral. A crowd of both supporters and protestors greets them when they arrive at the hall. As they walk inside, Arthur warns Olivia to stand in the crowd, rather than beside him, at the rally. Rafferty and the men who work for them have their sights focused on the balconies to try to prevent anything bad from happening. Arthur is assured that he will be safe.Ben Blackall/NetflixAfter an introduction from cousin Byron, Arthur gets on stage with his siblings and their spouses. He’s met with applauding crowds, and it seems like all is well until we see Rafferty pushing through the crowd. He looks relieved as he sees that what he thought was a disruption was only a man holding a small child on his shoulders. As Arthur begins to read his speech, Edward seems to notice that Ellen is in the crowd, looking around. Rafferty confronts her, and she tells him she’s there to try to stop her brother from doing something dangerous. She asks Rafferty to look for him and try to arrest him before he hurts anyone. She asks him not to use his gun on Patrick. In the back of the audience, two men signal each other. One starts a fight with another man, and while Rafferty is focused on breaking them up, two guards walk away from the front door, and Patrick and another man slip in. They pick up guns that have been hidden in the room. Ellen sees Patrick and blows a whistle to signal Rafferty. Before Raffety can get him, he fires off a shot. The season ends without seeing where the bullet traveled.Related StoriesLouis Partridge Knows He’s a ‘Golden Retriever’The Gilded Age Gets Renewed for Season 4Taissa Farmiga on Her Gilded Age Twist
