One UI 8.0 landed on my Galaxy S24+ yesterday, and I don't think I ever felt more neutral about a major OS upgrade from Samsung. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that my S24+ still runs smoothly and everything appears to be in order. However, there are only a couple of new features that I found particularly enjoyable. There is more to One UI 8 than meets the eye, and the changelog will let you know all about it. One UI 8 upgrades security, enhances the Galaxy Buds experience, simplifies connecting to Auracast, improves photo and video editing, and more. But my two favorite One UI 8.0 features are the enhanced split-screen mode and the new Weather app animations. One UI 8 is a great update for split-screen fansI don't know many people who value One UI's split-screen mode as much as I do. Granted, I don't use it every day, but I get enough use of split-screen to consider it a main One UI characteristic. To me, One UI would be a lot less appealing without it.Thankfully, Samsung's new One UI 8 update has not only kept split-screen but also improved it. You can now resize one of the split-screen apps to nearly 10% of the screen and the other to around 90%. And when you do, you can tap the smaller app to swap sizes between them. Watch the short video below for a demonstration. This is an awesome feature that will help me make the most out of split-screen mode without losing much screen real estate. I've only used it a few times so far, and it already feels natural. It's as if the 10-90% resize option has always been there. I love it!One UI 8 brings new and refreshing Weather app animationsOne of the most annoying things about One UI, if you ask me, is the presence of the Corporate Memphis art style. It's not predominant, but you can find a few design cards in some settings menus that use this design language to convey certain features.I am not a fan, and I've been waiting for a long time for Samsung to abandon this design language for something more creative and aesthetically pleasing than disproportionate, expressionless human caricatures.Well, One UI 8 moves one step in the right direction. It still has some Corporate Memphis remnants, but the updated Weather app replaces the dull caricatures with gorgeous new animations. I love them! Here's a preview in the video below. You won't know until you try itI want to share a short story about expectations. I initially thought that the new adaptive lock screen clock in One UI 8 would become one of my favorite features. But I was off the mark. While it sounds neat in theory, in practice, I haven't found much use for the adaptive clock in One UI 8.Why? Because it seems to work only with portrait photos, and I'm an abstract and landscape type of person. Besides, there's not a lot of freedom to move the adaptive clock around the lock screen, so it only works in some specific cases. My point is that, sometimes, reality doesn't match expectations, just like me not using the new adaptive clock isn't what I expected. So I hope you will find a lot more to love about One UI 8 than you expect once it reaches your Galaxy phone, assuming it hasn't already. Need a new device?
