‘He shouldn’t be that sensitive’- Kyle Shanahan calls out Liam Coen after fiery sideline scuffle with Robert Saleh

Wait 5 sec.

The tension built over the last week between Liam Coen and Robert Saleh finally spilled over onto the field on Sunday.Earlier in the week, the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator called out the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, accusing him of using an “advanced signal-stealing-type system” that puts the Jaguars in an “advantageous situation.”Salah and Coen had to be seperated after the two got involved in a heated exchange on SundayX/ @MySportsUpdateAs the coaches took to midfield after the Jaguars clinched a 26-21 victory over the 49ers on the road, the two got involved in a heated postgame exchange, which forced them to be separated.Things get chippy in Santa ClaraInitially, the two didn’t greet each other, but Coen eventually circled back to approach Saleh, shouting out: “Keep my name out of your mouth. Keep my name out of your f***ing mouth.”Although the viral video depicting this exchange doesn’t pick up the audio too clearly, per ESPN NFL reporter Nick Wagoner, Saleh responded: ““I’ll f**k your world up. You don’t wanna f**k with me. I will f***ing end your f***ing life.”Saleh was held back by a 49ers staff member, while Jags center Robert Hainsey had his coach’s best interests in mind, restraining Coen. Following the altercation, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about it all from his point of view, with Saleh not usually available to talk to the media after games.“I didn’t see what happened so I’m not sure, I don’t think he [Liam] shouldn’t be that sensitive about it”,” Shanahan said.“But it is what it is. I’m not too worried about it.”Shanahan was also asked about whether his DC’s sign-stealing comments angered the Jags’ coaching staff, though stood pat on his comments on Friday, where he suggested that Saleh’s comments should be taken as a compliment to how well they are doing.“We don’t totally care if coaches are pissed off,” he continued. “It has no effect on the game. I think Saleh was paying them a big compliment in what they’re good at doing. “It’s not illegal. He said [there’s] nothing illegal about it. I think you use the word sign stealing and what the headlines get with those type of words, I think the perception of that becomes wrong.”Shanahan fired aim at Liam Coen calling him “sensitive”GettyCoen hasn’t taken too kindly to Saleh’s comments, but refused to tell reporters about the on-field interactionGettyCoen, on the other hand, was asked to provide details about what happened postgame, but he remained tight-lipped, offering just a few words: “Not a big deal. Just keep that between us.”Saleh’ s initial comments ignited the postgame exchangeIn the build up to their Week 4 clash against Jacksonville at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Saleh first made the remarks about the Jaguars being good at sign-stealing on Thursday. This came as a response to being asked the question of what the Niners’ biggest challenge is against an offense like Coen’s. “Liam and his staff, a couple guys coming from Minnesota, they’ve got a — legally — a really advanced signal-stealing-type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation,” Saleh said. “They do a great job of it. They formation you to just try to find any nugget they can. So we’ve got to be great with our signals and we’ve gotta be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field.”He further named Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, as well as Kevin O’Connell of the Minnesota Vikings as other coaches who do similar things. Saleh made some comments earlier in the week, accusing the Jaguars of ‘sign-stealing’GettyTrevor Lawrence said the Jags were fired up by the mid-week commentsGetty“They’re almost elite in that regard. That whole entire tree from Sean [McVay] to Kevin O’Connell to all of those guys, they all do it,” Saleh added. “There’s challenges. They’re going to catch us in some situations where they have the advantage and we’ve just got to play sound, fundamental football and do our best to outexecute them.”Coen declined to address these comments in his Friday pregame press conference. Following the game, though, Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who threw 21-of-31 of his passes for 174 yards and a touchdown, exclaimed that they used the comments to fire them up ahead of the contest, though didn’t deny the sign-stealing allegations.“Definitely, you use everything you can [for motivation], and if they’re going to give you free fuel, you take it,” Lawrence said. “That’s something that you always do, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to go play the game. That stuff doesn’t really matter. “You’ve got to go take care of business and execute and find a way to win the game, which we did today.”The Jaguars have improved to 3-1 on the season, the same record as the injury-ridden Niners, who have been handed a boost with the return of Brock Purdy under center.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
