The rise is steeper than the rise in the total number of deaths by suicide over the past decade. Compared to 2013, the total number of deaths by suicide saw a 27% increase in 2023 (1.35 lakh in 2013 vs 1.71 lakh in 2023). Compared to the figure of 1.39 lakh deaths by suicide in 2019, the figure in 2023 saw a 23% increase.Student suicides made up around 8.1% of the total deaths by suicide in the country in 2023.This figure was 6.2% a decade ago.
