As of September 30, 2025, Walt Disney World Resort has made a long-overdue update to an offensive “Indians” display at one of its Florida hotels. Here’s what’s changed.Credit: Inside the MagicOver the past few years, The Walt Disney Company has removed several outdated and insensitive depictions of Native Americans from its theme parks. In 2024, Walt Disney Imagineers updated the Never Land Tribe scene on Peter Pan’s Flight at Disneyland Park and Magic Kingdom Park, replacing caricature-like animatronics with more respectful depictions of Tiger Lily and other Peter Pan (1953) characters. In 2022, Disney barred a high school drill team called “the Indianettes” from wearing Native American-inspired headwear while marching at the Magic Kingdom. Still, the group drew outrage after performing a “Scalp Em!” chant on Main Street, U.S.A.Now, four years after the “Cleveland Indians” Major League Baseball team changed its name to the “Cleveland Guardians,” Walt Disney World Resort has finally removed an outdated reference to the American League Central team’s old name. The team was founded as the “Columbus Buckeyes” in 1896 before changing its name to the “Cleveland Indians” in 1915. In 2021, the now-Cleveland Guardians changed its name and updated its controversial red-faced logo, citing concerns about cultural sensitivity.Credit: Erik Drost, FlickrStrangely, Walt Disney World Resort’s All-Star Sports Resort was one of the few places where the “Cleveland Indians” name remained. Buildings throughout the sports-themed Value Resort hotel feature pennants inspired by real football, baseball, and basketball teams. A “Cleveland Indian” banner has long decorated building nine in the “Homerun Hotel” section of the Disney Resort hotel.According to WDWNT, Walt Disney World Resort has finally removed the outdated sign and replaced it with a “Cleveland Guardians” pennant. However, other buildings at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort still feature outdated–albeit less offensive–pennants, like one for the Houston Astros decorated with a logo they only used in 1994 (the year the Disney Resort hotel opened).Credit: Mike Liu, FlickrWalt Disney World Resort hasn’t said anything publicly about the removal of the “Cleveland Indians” banner at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort. The change comes amid lobby updates at several Central Florida Disney Resort hotels, including Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s All-Star Music Resort, Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.Have you noticed other outdated signage at Walt Disney World Resort?
