The only person I've known irl who was into that begged me to ask my family if he could detect on their farm. He offered to bring them beer and steaks for the privilege of stomping through their fields finding old nails and coins, and was really disappointed when they said no. Happy ending though, on my advice he started driving out to rural bars and he made many friends who were happy to let him amble around and do his thing.
