Premier League urged to reintroduce radical ancient rule to determine relegation amid Tottenham drama

Wait 5 sec.

The Premier League must introduce relegation play-offs – more excitement is needed at the bottom of the table. That’s the view of legendary talkSPORT broadcaster Adrian Durham, who called on top-flight chiefs to implement the radical rule change.Tottenham are in danger of relegation into the Championship having failed to win in 2026GettyDurham joined Angelina Kelly and Alex Crook on talkSPORT’s Fiery Fridays podcast to discuss a ‘blazing hot take’ in this week’s show. And he believes the Premier League must implement a new way to determine relegation from England’s top tier.Kelly asked Durham to outline his take on Friday’s show, to which he replied: “I’m going to go brief with this, so stand by, pay attention.”Down and out? With his co-stars on tenterhooks, Durham suggested: “Play-offs are great, I think we’re all agreed on that. Premier League relegation is usually a little bit dull.“So, how do we energise it? How do we make it entertaining? Bring in the brinkmanship. Imagine the drama of Premier League relegation play-offs.“If you brought it in this season, imagine a play-off final, Wembley Stadium, West Ham against Spurs, winner stays up, loser goes down.“That is global. Universal. That’s the galaxy interested in that game. All of sudden, you’ve brought in something, and there would be no turning back.“Why would anybody, with any brains, say no to this? How we haven’t done it already, I don’t know.“Premier League relegation play-offs have to come in a soon as possible.”With just a point separating 18th-placed West Ham and Tottenham in 17th heading into the final seven games of the season, the race to avoid joining Wolves and Burnley in the Championship is set to go to the wire.De Zerbi has been named new Spurs boss as the north London side seek to avoid relegationGettySpurs appointed Roberto De Zerbi on Wednesday, handing the Italian a five-year deal with the 2025 Europa League winners hoping the former Marseille boss can guide the club to safety.“Crook, what are you saying?” Kelly asked talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent.“I think we’re just trying to relegate Tottenham, aren’t we?” he replied.“Do you know what? It’s not the worst idea in the world.“Last season that would have been potentially a showdown between Spurs and whichever one of those useless trio that finished in 18th place, so I think it does add to the jeopardy.“It does mean you’re not going to have a scenario where three teams that come up from the Championship automatically are the three that go straight back down as we’ve seen in the last couple of seasons. I’m all for it.Just a point separates West Ham and Tottenham as the London pair look to avoid the drop“They used to do it in all the old days didn’t they, back when Adrian was a boy.“It was a relegation-promotion play-off, with a team that finished towards the bottom of the top flight playing against a team towards the top of the second division.“I think Chelsea got relegated via a relegation play-off if my memory serves me right.”Ancient rule English football did indeed have its own version of a relegation play-off in the late 1980s – and it sent Chelsea down. When the EFL first brought in the play-offs in 1987, instead of four teams from the same league playing each other, it involved three teams from the lower division and one team from the higher division. In 1988, Chelsea finished 18th in the First Division, and it forced them into a two-legged final against Middlesbrough. They were defeated 2–1 on aggregate and were subsequently relegated.Ex-Crystal Palace chairman and talkSPORT co-host Simon Jordan recently predicted the EFL will introduce relegation play-offs after the Championship play-offs were expanded. Durham reaffirmed Crook’s comments, replying: “You’re right that used to happen back in the day and they quickly dropped it.“But it was teams at the bottom, I think it was one team towards the bottom of the Premier League, or the old first division, playing off against teams near the top of what is now the Championship.“I can understand why that didn’t really take off.“If it’s all about Premier League teams avoiding the drop, to me it really is a no brainer.West Ham has recovered well after a rocky start under NunoAFP“I’m amazed that the marketing machines behind the Premier League haven’t brought this in already.“If you think about relegation and the Premier League, bottom three go down after 38 games, and that’s it, it’s rare you’re going to get last day, last minute drama.“Look at the Premier League right now, it’s actually a rare year where we might actually have last day drama, but it kind of proves my point.“It’s an exception that proves the rule. Leeds go to West Ham on the final day, it could possibly be all over by then, or that could be a dramatic game.“Wouldn’t it be great if we had drama right through to the end in every single season?“Last season, there was a 13-point gap between third bottom and fourth bottom. That was so dull, we knew who was going down months before the end of the season.Tottenham are in danger of becoming the first ‘Big Six’ side to be relegated from the Premier LeagueGetty“We have to guarantee the drama. Nobody with any intelligence would argue the success of the play-offs.”Durham then asked Kelly for her thoughts, and she agreed with the former, stating: “I am actually… warming to this idea.“I like the idea of this. I agree that if it was to do with EFL clubs and Premier League clubs, it wouldn’t quite work because you’re giving Premier League teams a ‘Get Out Of Jail Free Card’ by making them play a team who are nowhere near the level of financial clout.“Relating it just to Premier League teams, I think it does create a bit of jeopardy.“It’s a rare season this season where it is all up for grabs. If you’ve got a season where it seems more likely, it does add an extra layer to it.“I’m sure someone will complain in that it’s an extra game that people have got to play.“They’re doing a variation of it in the Women’s Super League, where the third place in WSL 2 will play the team that’s going to get relegated in the WSL, and at the moment that will be Leicester and Crystal Palace, which will be interesting to see how that works.“But I think this could be quite a good idea. I think this is what to stir the pot.”Subscribe to talkSPORT Daily on Spotify today to automatically download Fiery Fridays every week.
