Joel Embiid calls out Daryl Morey after being held out of game vs. Wizards

Wait 5 sec.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was not happy about being held out of the team’s 153-131 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night due to illness, and he let his feelings be known following Philly’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.Embiid was angered to find out that he was being held out of the game online, and he directed questions about the situation to Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey."I was pissed off," Embiid said of the situation. "I wanted to play basketball. I wasn't allowed to play basketball. So, I think this is more of a question of Daryl Morey and whoever makes the decisions.”Ahead of Philadelphia’s matchup with the Miami Heat earlier in the week, Embiid began feeling ill, but he decided to play knowing how high the stakes are for playoff seeding at this late stage in the season. He planned to do the same against Washington before the organization put the kibosh on that. "I think going to Miami, I was pretty sick. But I understood how important the game was, and I still wanted to give us a chance to go out and try to do something because of how important the game was," Embiid said. More: Philadelphia 76ers star rookie receives major NBA acknowledgement"... I felt a little bit better going into Washington, definitely much better than I felt against Miami. I woke up, didn't sleep until probably, like, five in the morning or six. So, with that, I couldn't make it to shootaround. Then after that, I found out online that I wasn't playing that night. So that kind of caught me off guard, and yeah, that pissed me off, but then again, I guess they make the decisions. So it doesn't matter what I think or not. I just got to follow it. ... I don't know what's going on, I just want to play basketball." Yikes. This certainly doesn't sound great. On the contrary, it sounds like there's a clear disconnect between Embiid and the organization when it comes to the former MVP's availability. You can't necessarily blame the Sixers for trying to get Embiid to the postseason in one piece given his extensive injury history, but the communication needs to be better. There's no reason that Embiid should find out that he isn't playing on social media, as opposed to directly from the team. Or, if his being held out of the game was a disciplinary thing as a result of him missing shootaround, that also should have been communicated. Instead, you now have a star player publicly calling out an executive by name. The optics aren't great there. This story will be updated.More Philadelphia 76ers news: Former Philadelphia 76ers head coach headed to Basketball Hall of FamePaul George apologizes to Philadelphia 76ers fans for lengthy suspensionPhiladelphia 76ers star named one of the purest scorers in NBA historyFormer 76ers, Lakers center announces retirement from basketball
