The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 12. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, at 8:52 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Ercis (pop. 91,900) located 35 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Van (pop. 525,000) located 47 km from the epicenter, Diyadin (pop. 18,200) 78 km away, Adilcevaz (pop. 52,800) 83 km away, Patnos (pop. 87,500) 84 km away, Dogubayazit (pop. 70,200) 86 km away, and Showt (pop. 25,400) 102 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake. If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeApr 4, 2026 05:52:42 UTC - Local time at epicenterSaturday, Apr 4, 2026, at 08:52 am (Europe/Istanbul GMT +3)StatusconfirmedMagnitude5.1Depth7 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude39.0431°N / 44.1235°EMerkez, Van, IranAlso near: Turkey 0 km (0 mi) away | Azerbaijan 84 km (52 mi) away | Armenia 93 km (58 mi) away | Iraq 192 km (119 mi) awaySeismic antipode39.0431°S / 135.877°WQuality105 seismic stations (GFZ)Shaking intensityVI Strong shaking near epicenterFelt3 reportsPrimary data sourceEMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre)Nearest volcanoEtrusk (40 km / 25 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeBroken Clouds 6.6°C (44 F), humidity: 76%, wind: 2 m/s (3 kts) from ESEEstimated seismic energy released2.8 x 1012 joules (783 megawatt hours, equivalent to 674 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 5.1 | about seismic energy12 minutes ago reported feltApr 4, 2026 05:52 GMT / Apr 4, 2026 08:52 am (Istanbul time)Lat / Lng: 39.0431 / 44.1235: Turkey-Iran Border RegionSource: EMSCOther sources: GFZ: 5.1 / 46 km, RaspberryShake: 5.1 / 46 km, 1 more...Detail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-22873659',39.04310,44.12350,'12 minutes ago: Mag. 5.1, Turkey-Iran Border Region',html,'quakes-7-24.png',30,30,15,15,126]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="¬Felt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in IranNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Van, a city with more than 530,000 inhabitants in Turkey, in 89 km (55 mi) distance southwest of the epicenter.
