It would be a crime if Arsenal sold Myles Lewis-Skelly, they can get the best out of him in central midfield. These are the thoughts of talkSPORT’s Inside Gooners panel as their Premier League rivals Manchester United eye a summer switch.Lewis-Skelly has not been able to claim the starting left-back role as his own.GettytalkSPORT reported last week that United have identified Lewis-Skelly as a potential transfer target for the summer window. The 19-year-old has made only one Premier League start so far this season and is unlikely to be selected for England at the World Cup.Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie are ahead of him in the pecking order, with United keen to sign left-back competition for Luke Shaw. However, Inside Gooners insist that Arsenal must not sell the Hale End graduate, who they have told to stay patient amid a lack of minutes.“I think everything should be on the table for Myles Lewis-Skelly,” CJ Needham said. “Being a bit patient and waiting for the opportunity, going out on loan and things of that ilk. It would be a crime if he left. “He’s another one… we spoke about Max Dowman, him and Nwaneri did very well for England’s (U19s and) U21s, it’s a bit of a weird one, because it’s just the reality of playing for a team competing for a Premier League. “You had that ride last season where you’re playing in the Champions League. Obviously Hincapie and Calafiori have taken their chances, the left-back role has kind of changed. “A bit like Norgaard and what we were talking about earlier, with Zubi (Martin Zubimendi) and (Declan) Rice. I wondered why Mikel Arteta doesn’t give Myles Lewis-Skelly an opportunity in midfield. Does he think now’s not the right time? Is he lacking something in his game?“So, if you’re not going to get a look-in at left-back because that’s changed, and Arteta is not deviating away from the pivot, you can’t really complain about the minutes.”Needham later added: “For me, it’d be a shame because, I didn’t subscribe to it, but people were saying he’s a future captain, he’s the next Ashley Cole. We have to give him an opportunity… under no circumstances, if it was up to me, should Myles Lewis-Skelly be sold.”Inside Gooners have insisted that Arsenal cannot sell Lewis-SkellyGettyBack to what he knows best?Lewis-Skelly has spent much of his Arsenal career at left-back, but the midfield role is more natural for him.He can play in both central and defensive positions in that area of the pitch when needed. And former Gunner Adrian Clarke believes that Lewis-Skelly would be able to develop further if he was to return to midfield.“I think if we’re going to use that sort of terminology, in terms of it being criminal to let him go, it would be criminal to let him leave without giving him a go in central midfield, which is the position that he was trained at,” he explained.“That’s his natural position, and I think his attributes actually offer this team something that we sometimes miss, particularly if Declan Rice isn’t available. “Declan Rice is a driver, isn’t he? He carries the ball, he takes the team up the pitch. That’s not what Zubimendi does, it’s not what Christian Norgaard does. Arteta may have more success with Lewis-Skelly by playing him in midfieldAFP“Lewis-Skelly can be that guy, he can be the ball carrier that breaks the lines, that brings the athleticism. We’ve seen what a calm temperament he’s got as well, played in some huge games. “This season’s been a bit of a nightmare for him, we can’t get away from that. His performances at left-back, as a defender, have been poor. My gut is telling me, or my eyes are telling me, I’m not sure he’s a left-back. “I’m not sure that at the very highest level of football, that at this point, his defensive nous and defensive quality is enough to be a starter for Arsenal in these huge games at left-back. In central midfield, there’s room for massive growth. “He’s 19, most players at 19 haven’t made a first-team appearance. If they have, they’re the lucky ones. He’s got a wealth of it so, let’s let him grow as a player, and I hope that he’s allowed to grow as a central midfielder at Arsenal, because I think he’s got plenty to offer.”Inside Gooners on talkSPORTNowhere does Arsenal like talkSPORT does.Stay ahead of every tactical shift, manager sacking and transfer rumour by making talkSPORT’s Inside Gooners show your weekly go to for all things Arsenal related.Subscribe now to ensure you never miss a beat of the action one episode at a time, sponsored by BetMGM.Download the app or visit BetMGM.co.uk. 18+gambleaware.org
