HyderabadBringing an end to weeks of political uncertainty and legal wrangling, chairpersons and vice-chairpersons were elected in Ibrahimpatnam and Kyathanpally municipalities on Saturday, amid tight security.In Ibrahimpatnam municipality, BRS councillor T. Sudershan Reddy was elected as Chairman, while Muthyala Shyamala Bhaskar of the BJP was chosen as Vice-Chairperson. The election was held at the municipal council office in the presence of officials, with councillors from BRS, BJP and Congress attending the meeting.The election follows an order of the Telangana High Court, which revoked its earlier directive restraining the conduct and declaration of results for the chairman and vice-chairman posts in Ibrahimpatnam.The court was hearing a Habeas Corpus petition alleging the illegal detention of Akula Yadagiri, a BRS councillor. He was allegedly confined so that he could not contest for the Chairperson’s post. After Mr. Yadagiri was produced before the court, it paved the way for the elections to be completed.The BRS-CPI combine has wrested control of the Kyathanpalli municipality in Mancherial district, a key civic body in the State’s coal belt.G. Sandhya Rani of BRS and M. Saritha of CPI had won as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the civic body respectively, in the election held amid tight security arrangements on Saturday.The seven councillors of the Congress stayed away from the election. The BRS-CPI alliance had won 14 out of the 22 wards in the civic body in the municipal elections held in February this year, thereby commanding absolute majority in the newly-elected council.The indirect election for the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts of the Kyathanpally municipality were postponed twice in February due to lack of quorum initially and a clash between the BRS and the Congress cadres outside the municipal office on February 17.Meanwhile, the indirect election for the post of Chairperson of Khanapur municipality in Nirmal district was postponed to Sunday amid heated arguments between Congress and BJP councillors during the special meeting convened for this purpose.Published - April 04, 2026 09:01 pm IST
