An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred 30 minutes ago 16 km southwest of Sulmona, Italy, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported.The quake hit at a shallow depth of 17.60 km beneath the epicenter near Sulmona, Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy, late at night on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, at 11:56 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Scanno (pop. 1,900) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Sulmona (pop. 21,100) 16 km away.
