BMC to take total control of waste collection in Mumbai

To implement the move, the civic body has called for the constitution of a ward-level team to inspect buildings availing services from such waste processing agencies over the next seven days (Archive)The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday said that it will take complete control of waste collection from residential and commercial establishments in the city, to curtail services of third party agencies that transport waste.To implement the move, the civic body has called for the constitution of a ward-level team to inspect buildings availing services from such waste processing agencies over the next seven days.The move comes at a time when the civic body’s solid waste management policy is in the midst of an overhaul.According to officials, strict measures have been taken against these agencies, which charge fees for treating and dumping waste from bulk waste generators that produce waste over 100 kg , for failing to actually treat the waste.Going forward, the BMC is also slated to issue directives regarding charges to be levied on the bulk waste generators which do not process their waste.Meanwhile, in a meeting convened Monday, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City), Ashwini Joshi has called for the formation of a ward-level team under the leadership of an Assistant Head Supervisor (AHS) to implement the drive.Over the next seven days, the AHS along with the ward-level team is expected to visit housing societies, commercial establishments and other bulk waste generators across the city to check data about how many people are outsourcing the task of waste collection.Story continues below this adAfter collecting names of the external agencies and the charges levied by them, the BMC will serve notices to establishments to stop availing services of the external agencies.To ensure smooth implementation of the plan, assistant engineers and executive engineers of the solid waste management department have been charged with the provision of logistical arrangements for collection of refuse from the establishments.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:BMC
