‘Set yourself back’ – Los Angeles Rams find $33million solution but Matthew Stafford ‘panic’ starting to escalate

Wait 5 sec.

Franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford still hasn’t practised for the Los Angeles Rams during training camp. The 37-year-old has been out of camp dealing with a back issue.Stafford has been on the shelf all summerGettyThe regular season is a month away, and Stafford hasn’t suited up for his team yet. While the prevailing sentiment coming out of Los Angeles is that Stafford will be fine and ready to go come Week 1, there is a quiet concern that is starting to build.Head coach Sean McVay gave a recent update on the health status of his QB1 and wasn’t exactly overwhelmingly positive.“It’s static throwing,” McVay said of what Stafford will be doing this week, per ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.“It’s some of the unloaded running on the treadmill. Sometimes it might even be walking. He’s able to do a little bit of lighter cardio and able to do some good core work.“But it’s more just functional strength surrounding the area while making sure that you don’t do anything to set yourself back based on the trajectory that he’s doing. But we are looking forward to getting him and easing him back into football, hopefully in the near future.”The near future better be very, very near, because there isn’t much time left between now and kickoff against the Houston Texans on September 7.As cloudy as Stafford’s status seems to be, the opposite can be said about the man who lines up next to him.The Rams have signed running back Kyren Williams to a three-year, $33million contract extension that includes $23m guaranteed. The 2022 fifth-round pick had made it abundantly clear when camp started, that he wanted to be in Los Angeles and wanted to be a Ram.“I want to play for the Rams,” Williams said that day. “That’s who I want to be with. That’s who I want to stay with. I know it will work out.”Williams has been the heartbeat of the Rams offense the last few seasonsGettyWilliams has 31 scrimmage touchdowns over the last two seasonsGettyStafford’s status seems to be up in the airGettyWilliams has been a breath of fresh air in McVay’s offense since taking over the lead back role in 2023.Last year, he rushed for a career-high 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns, while accounting for 43 per cent of the Rams’ total touches. According to ESPN research, that was the highest rate in the NFL.Over the last two seasons, Williams is tied with Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs for most scrimmage touchdowns with 31. He trails only Derrick Henry (3,088) and Saquon Barkley (2,967) for most rushing yards over the last two seasons with 2,443.In other words, Williams was due for a big pay raise, and he now has it, with his future secured in LA for the foreseeable future.Williams’ new contract now gives him the seventh-highest average annual salary at the position. He trails Barkley’s $20.6 million, Christian McCaffrey‘s $19 million, Henry’s $15 million, Jonathan Taylor’s $14 million, Alvin Kamara’s $12.25 million and Josh Jacobs’ $12 million.Williams now sits at $11 million.
