Daylight as a Hall of Famer, moonlight as an actor in one of Hollywood’s greatest comedies. That was the life of Cam Neely. However, for the last 15 years, he has held the title of president of the Boston Bruins.Neely is a Boston sports legendGettyNeely has helped the $3 billion franchise win their sixth Stanley Cup in 2011 when the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in a highly-contested seven-game series.Ironically enough, the Bruins and Canucks were the only franchises that Neely played for during the course of his 13-year NHL career. He played his first three seasons in Vancouver, before playing an entire decade in Boston. And while he never won the Stanley Cup as a player, he was able to get the job done as an executive.Neely was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005, but what many may not know or remember is that he also starred in Jim Carrey’s hit movie, Dumb and Dumber. He portrayed the character of Sea Bass in the 1994 film, an upset trucker who gets into frequent confrontations with Carrey’s character Lloyd and Jeff Daniels’ character Harry. Not only could Neely get in front of the camera and skate with the best of them, but he even once set a record that only the Great One has surpassed.During the 1993/94 season, Neely scored his 50th goal in only his 44th game. Only Wayne Gretzky scored 50 goals in fewer games, with an NHL-best 50 goals in his first 39 games. His focus has since been on trying to restore the glory to the iconic franchise that he has called home since the 1986.After bringing home the Stanley Cup in 2011, they have been trying to repeat that feat ever since, getting close a few times but haven’t quite replicated 2011.The Bruins made the Finals again in 2013 and 2019, but came home empty handed.Neely was a five-time All-StarGettyNeely is regarded as one of the greatest power forwards to play the gameGettyHe’s a man of many talents, starring alongside Hollywood greats in the famous filmDuring the 2022/2023 season, the Bruins made history by setting an NHL records for wins with 65 and points with 135. They were also the fastest ever to 50 wins and 100 points, winning both the Atlantic Division title and the Presidents’ Trophy. However, they were upset in the first round by the eighth-seeded Florida Panthers, after blowing a 3-1 lead.It is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in NHL history. Since then, Neely has been trying to retool and construct the roster he believes is fit enough to compete for the Stanley Cup once again. In January of 2025, during the midst of the season, Neely addressed a pivotal point in the current and future state of the franchise.“I think, right now, we’ve gotta look at two paths: one that we’re buying and one that we may just be retooling a little bit,” Neely told the media at the time.“We still feel like we’ve got a playoff team here and we certainly don’t want to jeopardize getting out of the playoffs because we made some moves that may be good for the future, but not good for the present.” It was a classic buyer-seller conundrum that Neely found his team in.However, the Bruins ended up missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016, finishing 33–39–10 and last in their division.Neely hired new head coach Marco Sturm in June, hoping to give the franchise a new voice and a breath of fresh air, after the pairing of Jim Montgomery and then interim head coach Joe Sacco ran its course. If anyone can bring the Bruins back to glory, it’s Neely. He’s been there, done that. He’s also starred next to Carrey in one of the most popular films of all-time.What can’t he do?
