My extended family is Polish, but it's the same phenomenon...if people aren't living similarly, it's kind of hard to explain. But essentially if you are in the US, Canada, UK or similar, there is this belief that you are a millionaire lolling under palm trees somewhere (even if the relatives have actually been to your country and not seen any Kardashians hanging around). The relatives could hear about all the problems in your country on the news, even walked past homeless people themselves when visiting...but somehow this doesn't seem to register, because it doesn't fit their narrative. And your parents will usually side with those family members, telling you it's "not their fault they didn't grow up with your opportunities", etc. (Because basic manners are expensive??) 🤷
