In view of the Valiyangadi incident, judicial member of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) K. Baijunath on Tuesday directed the authorities to urgently inspect all old and potentially unsafe government, semi-government and local self-government buildings in the district.Mr. Baijunath, who visited the site where the collapse of a portion of a decades-old building resulted in the death of four headload workers on Monday, said that renovation and restoration works of the structures should be carried out on a war footing. The Commission asked the Kozhikode Corporation Secretary and the District Collector to conduct an immediate inquiry into the tragic incident and submit a detailed report within one week. The directive was issued to the District Collector. The Commission also instructed that the directions be immediately communicated to the departments and the authorities concerned. The SHRC had earlier registered a suo motu case based on media reports. The Commission suggested that the Corporation secretary give special attention to ensuring the safety of buildings within the civic body limits. Buildings requiring urgent repairs should be prioritised and their renovation should be completed in a time-bound manner. The order further said that it was the responsibility of the authorities to take strict measures to prevent a recurrence of incidents like the one at Valiyangadi. It asked the District Collector and the Corporation Secretary to prepare a list of buildings requiring immediate repair and subbmit a copy to the Commission within three weeks. The order also warned that strict action would be recommended against officials responsible for lapses affecting public safety. The case will be considered during the Commission’s sitting to be held in March at the Public Works department Rest House in Kozhikode.Published - February 24, 2026 08:23 pm IST
