https://brilliantmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/eu-fruit-slow.mp4The video above was created by Yannick Brouwer and shows where the largest supplier for different types of fruits to the EU comes from each month during the year. Here’s what he had so say about the map:When buying fruit and vegetables at your local supermarket, you might notice that the country of origin sometimes changes. I wanted to show how a network of farmers, traders and logistics companies from different countries provide all-year fruit.Every product that is traded between countries is categorized using the Harmonized System. This HS code is for example used by customs to identify products and to determine import duties, but it’s also useful for trade statistics.Statistical organizations like@EU_Eurostat and http://trademap.org provide a lot of trade data for free. I used Trade Map and data from 2021. BTW, till the end of the year European citizens have access to monthly trade data. For the visualization I wanted to get a bit experimental, it’s definitely not the most digestible map but I like how you can follow the individual emoji’s to explore patterns. The basemap is based on Mapbox ‘Frank’, designed by @ClareMTrainor. I used Figma to colorize the map, paste the in the right country and add the annotations. What do you think?
