The designer will also reflect on his 16-year tenure as the creative director at Louis Vuitton, in addition to his career achievements and his friendship with Coppola. What have Coppola and Jacobs said about the documentary?Ahead of the premiere of Marc by Sofia at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, the pair sat down for an August 2025 interview with Variety, where they detailed their thought process going into filming.“I always feel pretty vulnerable when I show work or when I share work, but I felt very comfortable exposing everything to Sofia. It felt very natural, once I was over the initial anxiety of actually participating,” Jacobs said.Rindoff/Dufour//Getty ImagesThe filmmaker explained that she initially hesitated before taking on the project because of her close bond with the fashion designer. The pair’s friendship dates back to the 1990s, after her late mother, Eleanor Coppola, took her to see his Perry Ellis 1993 grunge collection.“I wasn’t thinking of doing a documentary, but I always love talking to Marc. He’s interesting and inspiring. And so when the Cutlers approached me—they had talked to Marc about this documentary, and would I do it?—I thought, ‘I can’t do that. Because that’s my friend, I’d have to do a good job.’”She continued, “I kept thinking about how much fun it would be to follow this collection, popping in throughout the process, and then also wanting to share all his references and inspirations with the younger generation. I wanted it to feel like an impressionistic portrait of him, and to be able to go on these tangents about his inspirations. To try to meander, and discover as we go. It was new for me, and really fun to work this way—we got to almost collage.”Pascal Le Segretain//Getty ImagesJacobs and Coppola at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 2, 2025.When Marc by Sofia made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2, 2025, the pair held a press conference at the festival and shared more insight into the making of the documentary.“It was really a sincere, small project,” the filmmaker recalled. “It was really important for me to show Marc as a creative person in his process, and I was happy that he felt comfortable around me…I think it's always important for me to show something genuine, show the person that I love and their real side.”Jacobs explained that he wasn’t too worried about how he would be perceived during the filming of the documentary, either. He jokingly added, “I knew this wasn't gonna be a Barbara Walters feature where I was gonna be stuck and choke on some detail or some controversy or something like that.”When will the Marc by Sofia be released?Marc by Sofia will premiere in select theaters in New York on March 20.
